The Collared owlet (family Strigidae) is found in Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, China, India, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam, inhabiting foothill and mountain forests. The smallest owl in Asia (15 cm, weight about 60 g) is gray-brown with stripes on the back and sides, a spotted head, white eyebrows, lemon-yellow eyes and a white patch on the throat; females are slightly larger.
Nests in natural tree cavities or in old woodpecker and barbet cavities. Feeds on small birds, insects, lizards, invertebrates and small mammals. Status: Least Concern.
